Microsoft announced that they will be unveiling the new Windows Phone 7 operating system next Monday, October 11. There will be launch events in New York as well as London.

The company hopes to overcome a few missteps in their recent adventures into the smartphone market. Most recently of which was the launch of the Kin with only tepid market demand.

Reports indicate the OS will first be available in Europe and in the US shortly thereafter.

I ran through the demo on the official website. It’s pretty clear that  they are trying to mix business with pleasure. With direct access to Office and Outlook, as well as personal updates, Microsoft is ultimately trying gain market share by seamlessly combining work-related task functionality with (let’s face it) much more fun functionality like apps, games and social media.

So in my view, Microsoft is more poised to gain market share from RIM than from iOS or Android. But before they have any chance of winning any race, they first need to get out the gate.
