According to some recent polling and research by CNN.com, 82 percent of American adults now have a cell phone. Of those, 17 percent are smartphones.
Of the multitude of features our cell phones have, text messaging is the most popular, with 57 percent of cell phone users saying they text regularly. Checking email and surfing the web are tied for the second most popular (23 percent each) activities US residents use their phones for.
In terms of US smartphone operating systems (OS) market share, Blackberry has the largest at 35 percent, followed by iPhone at 28 percent, Windows Mobile at 15 percent and Android with 13 percent.
It’s interesting that in spite of the recent successes of the iPhone and Android, based phones, Blackberry continues to have a fairly commanding share of the market – with 7 percent more than iPhone. With the new Windows Phone 7 OS and HP’s new webOS 2.o, it will be fascinating to see how market share changes in the coming months.
